Lottie peeled off her own hat and goggles, then opened her door. Rosie jumped off her lap and began exploring the wooded track. They followed Beatrice, who was already marching off to the viewpoint. After twenty yards, the trees parted, and the blue sky and aquamarine sea greeted them. Monaco glimmered beneath them. Lottie could see the Rock of Monaco and could just make out the fortified walls of the Prince’s Palace on it. The sun was warm, and birdsong came from the scrubby little trees around them.

‘Beautiful, isn’t it?’ said Beatrice, surveying the scene with her hands on her hips. ‘The French Riveria! That’s Cape Martin over there.’ She pointed to her left. ‘I think you can see Menton too. And beyond that lies Italy.’ She pointed to the right. ‘Nice is in that direction. Have you been to Nice?’

‘No,’ said Lottie.

‘You should. It’s nice,’ Beatrice laughed. ‘Let’s get back in the car!’
